The Needham Select Board is holding a public hearing on the proposed Tree By-law on Tuesday, September 8 at 6 PM at Town Hall, with the option to participate via Zoom. The proposal would create new protections for certain trees during major construction and redevelopment, helping preserve Needham’s tree canopy while balancing homeowners’ needs. 🐝🌱 If you care about climate resilience, wildlife, shade, stormwater, or simply keeping Needham green, this is a great opportunity to learn about the proposal and make your voice heard. You can attend in person or virtually and share your feedback! 📍 Needham Town Hall / 💻 Zoom

Fall Yard Tip: Leave Some Leaves You don't have to remove every single fallen leaf from your yard! Although this may seem like a lazy idea, it actually...helps! Leaves can return nutrients to the soil and provide cover and insulation for insects, including overwintering butterflies and moths. You can leave some leaves in garden beds, mulch them into the lawn, or add them to compost. A perfectly clean yard isn't always the best yard for wildlife. Could Soybeans Help Fight Climate Change? Scientists are testing genetically engineered soybeans with deeper roots that could potentially store more carbon underground while helping crops handle drought. The researchers are studying whether these deeper-rooted plants can maintain good crop yields while storing more carbon in the soil. The work is still being tested, but it shows how agriculture could potentially become part of climate solutions. Source: Associated Press

Sustainability Explained: What Is a Heat Pump? 2 out of 5 A heat pump doesn't create heat the way a traditional furnace does. Instead, it moves heat from one place to another using electricity. In winter, it can move heat from outside into your home. In summer, it can move heat from your home back outside. Because it transfers heat instead of generating it, heat pumps can be a very energy-efficient way to heat and cool buildings. Source: U.S. Department of Energy

Sustainability Myth vs. Fact - 2 out of 3 MYTH: Electric vehicles are always worse for the environment because making their batteries creates so much pollution. FACT: EVs do create emissions during manufacturing, including from battery production, but their total emissions depend on factors such as the electricity used for charging, the vehicle itself, and how long it is used. There isn't one number that applies to every EV. Source: U.S. Environmental Protection Agency

A recent study in Belgium found that a farming approach called agri-wilding was associated with substantially greater butterfly and moth diversity than conventional agriculture. The system combines productive trees and shrubs with species-rich grasslands while allowing some natural ecological changes to occur. Researchers found higher species richness and abundance of butterflies and moths after years of this type of land management. Source: Biological Conservation

The study also found that soil carbon and microbial biomass can recover substantially during the first few decades after forests are restored. Trees affect much more than the parts of an ecosystem that we can see above ground. Source: Nature Ecology & Evolution
